If you're like me, you probably do a lot of online shopping. Unfortunately, there's no getting around the fact that this usually means shipping costs for one item can be upwards of $10. So when I saw the CEO of FedEx complaining about high shipping prices in an interview on CNN, I was pretty intrigued to learn more about what's going on with shipping these days. Turns out, while there are some options like trying to rent space at a nearby business which FedEx called "quite a hassle," one of the most popular methods across all carriers is called "deferred air". Basically, when you make a shipment from one FedEx hub to another, the package is placed on a plane for a non-existent route. It'll fly from one FedEx hub to another for a period of time and then finally go directly to its destination city. From American Airlines' perspective, this probably isn't a big deal. Their planes are in the air anyway and it's no skin off their backs if they delay an inbound flight by a few minutes or hours. The problem is that other airlines aren't so happy about it. And when American Airlines flights are delayed, it costs them money. So they threaten to take away the discount they offer to partners like FedEx. It's pretty simple really. They're getting something for free and FedEx is forced to pay them more money for using their system. What's more, American Airlines doesn't appear to care that this hurts their customers either - their position on the issue seems to be that everyone should just accept it or get out of the business of shipping through American if they don't like it so much. As for FedEx itself, while they may not be happy about having to pay higher charges for shipping through American Airlines, they do seem willing to keep doing business with them. FedEx also seems convinced that the airlines are acting in good faith and that it's just an "unfortunate coincidence" when their planes are delayed. The article points out that, despite the fact FedEx does not fly through American Airlines hubs, they still pay them $130 million per year for using their airspace. Ultimately, FedEx has no other choice than to accept this agreement. They may be putting up a defiant front by broadcasting their frustration with these charges to CNN, but they know full well that, if they don't keep all the other airlines happy with this deal (and there are several major ones), it will probably be impossible for them to stay competitive. For more information on this, including an answer to the question "why does FedEx charge airlines to use their airspace?" you can check out the CNN article here.
